Our future farmhouse is not so far off in the futu Our future farmhouse is not so far off in the future anymore. We are stunned at how quickly the house has come together. Not without a few hiccups (especially the weather) but it’s looking amazing regardless!! The standing seam roof….let me just tell you, it is a craft all of its own. We love it! Our final framing walk thru is set for today. Insulation is set to begin Thursday. Drywall is on the schedule for next week. Our builder is aiming at mid-May for completion. It’s almost time for all the finish work…When all the details I’ve been imagining, fussing over and pondering on begin to come together. Hanging on tight for a whirlwind of the next 2 months.

I organized my seed packets using a 2 in. binder and 4-pocket photo refill pages I found on Amazon. Seed packets fit perfectly in them! I labeled my seed categories using Avery ultra-tabs and printed a binder cover. It’s great to have seeds easily accessible when it’s time to plant.

We recently thinned and replanted 25 bearded irise We recently thinned and replanted 25 bearded irises.

Some advice I was given:
•Planting depth can be tricky…too deep they can rot and die; not deep enough, they can dry out and die. •Water a little but not too much or they will rot.

Well, I’m here to say they are doing very well. I think their middle leaf habit tells me all I need to know. 😆. In all honestly, Irises don’t seem as high maintenance as I was told they were. They’ve had hose water (at least weekly), some rain, 100 degree heat and recently some mulch. They are just fine.
I did some spring prep on our chicken coop to welc I did some spring prep on our chicken coop to welcome 6 new laying hens. Last summer we lost the remainder of our backyard flock during a bad heat wave. This spring we decided to get laying hens rather than raising chicks for 2 reasons…
1. Impatience, 😆 chicks don’t start laying eggs until 5-6 months old. We wanted fresh eggs as quickly as possible.
2. they require a bit more effort than we were able to offer in this particular season.

If you consider doing this call your local feed store or a local chicken farm. Be sure to ask how old the hens are. Hens can be younger, about to start laying or older, about to be retired. There are pros and cons to both. Decide what works best for you.

Stay tuned to see how I styled up the coop to make it pretty.

Leave a comment sharing how you like to prepare your coop for spring.

If I can do this…you can too! Countless times others have told me: “I wish I could do that.” “I just don’t think I can do that.” The truth is YES YOU CAN! I learned from the internet. It is chock full of free resources. I’m here to encourage you! My momma always told me “WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY!” So get started my friend!

🛑STOP your chickens from digging in potted plan 🛑STOP your chickens from digging in potted plants for good by sticking a dollar store pinwheel in the dirt. If it’s a larger pot use several. For whatever reason chickens are deterred by the movement. After having countless petunias ruined by our flock, my mother-in-law suggested I try pinwheels. It worked like a charm!
✨BONUS: It has even worked on cats.✨

What coop must-have did I miss? Let me know! Here What coop must-have did I miss? Let me know!

Here’s why these are must-haves ⬇️
•A work bench broom is the best for coop cleaning IMO. I get them @harborfreight . They are inexpensive and hold up well.
•Cinnamon scent is supposed to help deter flies so I hang these inside the coop. Where there are chickens, there are flies! I’ll take whatever help I can get.
•An industrial style metal dust pan (without a rubber edge) is the way to go. It’s great for scooping up dirty shavings.
•The solar barn light offers soft light at the coop door without being too harsh or bright through the windows. The one here from @tractorsupply is still going strong after 2 years!
•Plastic scrapers are perfect for all the stray poop on roosting bars and rinse off easily with water.
•A battery light inside the coop is just necessary, especially when you are training young chickens to roost or if you need to check on an ill chicken at night. Also, leave the light on to help guide young hens into the coop at night.
•Lined nesting box pads seem bougie I know, but if an egg breaks in the box, it’s a messy ordeal. These make clean up a snap. Plus, hens love to rearrange the straw.
•An outdoor thermometer is ESSENTIAL where I live in Texas. Since we tend to have very hot summers, this allows me to keep an eye on how warm the coop gets. It’s nerve-racking to find an overheated hen in a nesting box. In summer I pay close attention to the flock’s whereabouts to ensure they are staying cool in the breeze or shade.
•This automatic chicken door is my most coveted must-have. I splurged on this several years back so our neighbors could hen-sit while we were out of town. I didn’t want them to have to get up at the crack of dawn to let our chickens out. As an added bonus we were able to sleep in every now and then. The best part, I have only had to change the battery ONCE since I bought it almost 3 years ago!! (Reliable is an understatement! It even survived the EPIC 2022 Ice Storm that shut down our entire power grid!!)
